Is fair fashion manufacturing possible & is fair working without Fairtrade certifications within the textile industry possible?

YES, fair fashion without Fairtrade certification is possible. At Kampoeng Confectie the main pillars on which we built our business are sustainability and social criteria.  Fair working is the core of our business. Until today we conduct textile manufacturing without Fairtrade certifications. See more on this page about our fair working policy.

How many people work for Kampoeng Confectie?

In total Kampoeng Confectie Indonesia has (project based) contracts with 8 people. These contracts are all with people in our home-based industry.

Our other manufacturing locations have 4-100 people working for them, with the same fair working conditions.

Do men also work for Kampoeng Confectie?

Yes, there are also men working for Kampoeng Confectie. For sampling, pattern design and sewing we have men working for us.

Why we do not have Fairtrade certification as a textile manufacturer?

Obtaining Fairtrade certifications takes time, energy and money. Smaller organisations, like ours, are challenged to meet the extensive certification requirements.

With Kampoeng Confectie we make a difference. That’s is why we choose to focus on what is most important to us: our employees and customers.

To be transparant about our (fair) working practices we made our own Fair Working Policy. Our fair working policy shows you we can work fair in the fashion industry, without a Fairtrade certificate.

It is a conscious choice for us at Kampoeng Confectie Indonesia to not obtain any Fairtrade certification (yet). This means we are not held accountable by regular surveys and ‘control’ of a certification company or organisation. We are accountable, though. And we are held accountable by our employees, our manufacturing partners, by our customers and our own consciousness. Transparency is therefore really important to us.

Not only our own employees are important. We also talk about the working conditions at our suppliers and manufacturers. To strengthen this, we are developing a Code of Conduct to sign by our (local) suppliers and manufacturers

Is there any doctor affiliated to the company?

There is no doctor joined with the company yet. We stimulate our sewers to join the National Health Insurance (Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional by BPJS). This insurance costs 2 – 5 euro / dollar a month. These costs are of course included in the living wage.

Work-related incidents which require a doctor, are fully covered by Kampoeng Confectie. Personalised solutions can be found. For example, when one of our seamstresses needs money for (other) medical needs.

We are working towards offering all sewers a full-time based contract. This contract will include the coverage of the National Health Insurance.

How does Kampoeng Confectie make sure there are no children at the home-based workplaces?

We ask, and check, that our seamstresses have their machines in a different workroom. Next to that, children are not allowed in the workroom. Children (who are not in school) should be looked after by someone else in the family when the sewers are working. These subjects we talk about with our seamstresses on a regular basis.

Is it possible to visit the company?

At this moment, due to pandemic restrictions, it is not possible to visit Kampoeng Confectie.

When the pandemic restrictions are over, it will be possible to visit on appointment. Since you visit our sewers in their own house in the kampoeng, not all our sewers are comfortable to receive (foreign) visitors.

We plan to open our own studio later [2021] and hope to be able to receive you there.
